The first few days of the race saw surprisingly few dropouts. As the teams continue through the southeastern Utah Desert, however, exhaustion and medical problems have begun to add up.
In the first day and a half, teams Utah and xxtreme.us withdrew due to medical issues, and teams routed onto the short course included Stinky Feet/Kilt Racers (missed checkpoint), Racing With Giants and NADS/Synovus; all are continuing the race in the Sport Class.
Seven teams have lost a single racer and are continuing on unranked and can finish as three-person teams. Six of the racers listed below are reported to be in good condition and are not hospitalized.
Team Pittsburgh lost Scott Murrell to exhaustion late on the 25th
Team NanoMed lost James Willson to heat-related issues on the 26th
Gerber Gear lost Ryan Fleming to a right knee tendonitis on the 27th
Subaru lost Steven Carre to foot problems on the 27th
CureLeukemia lost Brad Hagen due to a medical drop out on the 27th
MPGear.com lost Duncan Sailors to bad feet on the 28th
Powerade Cyanosis lost Gert Foster to heat exhaustion on the 28th; he was transported to a hospital as a precaution. The team is continuing unranked.
Four other teams have withdrawn from the competition:
Mary Betts of Team myCitadel Wallet is suffering from a foot infection and receiving medical treatment from race medical staff. The team is withdrawing.
Team AdventureRacingConcepts.com has withdrawn from the race at TA6 due to team-wide foot problems and is heading back to Primal Quest headquarters.
Team Don’t Look Back withdrew at CP17 – no reasons are available at this time.
